Bumblefest To Buzz Into WPB With Next Wave Of Indie Rock<\/a>
\nWhen the lineup for the eighth-annual\u00a0Bumblefest<\/a><\/strong>, a September institution presented by the influential SoFla music zine PureHoney<\/strong>, dropped in July, I didn\u2019t recognize any of the headliners. While that might spell doom for many a festival that relies on big-name recognition, in terms of this curated indie-rock extravaganza, such relative obscurity is a compliment. \u2013 Boca Raton Magazine<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nFor decades, the 500 block of Clematis Street has been downtown West Palm Beach\u2019s live music hub. For the past For the past several years, a September event has taken that block party one step further. Bumblefest<\/strong> is a two-night, multi-stage Clematis Street party celebrating the anniversary of PureHoney<\/strong> Magazine<\/strong>. \u2013 Florida Weekly<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nThat’s what makes Bumblefest<\/strong> that much more special. The local alt-monthly PureHoney<\/strong> has been doing the heavy lifting for 13 years bringing bands down to the southern tip of the sunshine state doing one off shows on the monthly and eight years ago they started Bumblefest which is a true discovery based festival. They might not book major headliners, but what they do is put together really interesting line ups of up and coming or cult artists\u00a0\u2013 Crashing Through Publicity<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nDo you hear that buzz? Bumblefest<\/strong> is back Friday, Sept. 6 and Saturday, Sept. 7 for an eighth edition of more indie rock than Downtown West Palm might be able to handle. The brainchild of PureHoney Magazine<\/strong> publisher, Steev Rullman, Bumblefest aims\u00a0to bring sounds and acts from all over the country that generally don\u2019t make their way to South Florida. \u2013 Atlantic Current<\/strong><\/p>\n

BumbleFest returns to West Palm with ‘rebellious’ punk, indie rock<\/a>
\nPunk rock music’s anti-establishment ethos and social commentary famously emerged in the rebellious 1970s. But the genre has been making a resurgence in contemporary culture \u2014 spawning new expressions of rage, uncertainty and even joy. That’s particularly true in Florida, where the underground punk and indie rock scene is thriving. Next weekend, 21 bands will be head-bobbing through this alternative wave at BumbleFest<\/strong>, Palm Beach County\u2019s preeminent indie music festival. \u2013\u00a0WLRN<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nBumblefest<\/strong> is back with its 8th edition at\u00a0Respectable Street<\/strong> in West Palm Beach on September 6th and 7th. Organized by\u00a0PureHoney Magazine<\/strong><\/a>, this festival brings a vibrant mix of live music from across the country to South Florida. \nIt\u2019s not hard to hear the influence of everything from Laurel Canyon folk, \u201860s psychedelia, and even the pained optimism of Elliott Smith<\/strong>. The L.A. quintet\u2014fresh off the release of a new album,\u00a0Phantom Idol<\/i>\u2014plays a hometown-ish show over the weekend, but will be in the Sunshine State by hump day as part of a short tour that wraps at South Florida\u2019s revered Bumblefest. \u2013 Creative Loafing<\/strong><\/p>\n

A Chat with Dion Lunadon<\/a>
\nLunadon spoke to\u00a0PureHoney<\/b>\u00a0over Zoom from his home studio in Brooklyn in July as he prepared to lead his band across Europe and North America. A founding member of early-aughts garage terrors\u00a0The D4<\/b>\u00a0and then bassist in the darker-hearted\u00a0A Place to Bury Strangers<\/b>, Lunadon had lots to say about surviving and thriving as a musician, living in America and making a racket with that chain.\u00a0\u2013 PureHoney Magazine<\/strong><\/p>\n

BUMBLEFEST 2023<\/h1>\n

Now in its seventh year, Bumblefest<\/a>\u2014the annual festival presented by the industrious South Florida music and art zine PureHoney<\/strong><\/a>\u2014offers another curated lineup of electronic and indie rock organized by some of the scene\u2019s most discerning tastemakers. Los Angeles-based headliners Death Valley Girls<\/strong>, which hired Iggy Pop<\/strong> to star in one of its recent videos, indeed channel some of the Stooges<\/strong>\u2019 protean energy, while also evoking Sleater-Kinney<\/strong> and a timeless back-to-the-garage ethos, with more than a touch of the cosmic in their lyrics and songwriting. Other top acts include fellow L.A. artist Al Lover<\/strong>, an electronic musician with an omnivorous approach to scavenging, who describes his sound as \u201cNeu!-Age Spiritualized<\/strong> Repetition\u201d; the shimmering acoustic-guitar driven bedroom pop of Canada\u2019s Dusted<\/strong>; the throwback hardcore sludge of New York\u2019s Gnarcissists<\/strong>; SoCal singer-songwriter Gal Musette<\/strong>, who marries classic chanson singing to an indie-folk aesthetic; and some 37 more bands spread across two nights of revelry across five stages in West Palm Beach\u2019s hippest street. Death Valley Girls Headline Bumblefest With Garage, Girl-Group Melodies<\/a>
\nDeath Valley Girls’ latest album,\u00a0Islands in the Sky<\/i>, has a spooky, otherworldly feel. The garage-rock, girl-group influence the Los Angeles band showed off on previous albums is still evident, but it almost sounded as if, for this batch of songs, the quartet\u00a0was aiming for the perfect Halloween record. Singer-songwriter\u00a0Bonnie Bloomgarden says that was very much intentional. \u2013 Miami New Times<\/strong><\/p>\n

INDIE MUSIC BUZZ: Bands to converge on the 500 block of Clematis Street for Bumblefest<\/a>
\nSouth Florida\u2019s original live music scene has been in various states of flux for the past decade, but COVID-19 put it on the back burner alongside many internet plagued print publications. For the past few years, many original bands have performed live for reduced fees or perhaps even only a virtual tip jar, or more likely been replaced by cheaper karaoke, deejays, trivia, open mics, open jam nights and solo or duo acts playing with programmed backing tracks. Yet area music promoter and magazine publisher Steev Rullman has managed to flip the script while sporting both of those challenging titles. His online and print publication, PureHoney magazine, is distributed between Stuart and Miami, and celebrated its 12th anniversary in August. And since 2016, Rullman has managed to attract indie bands and artists from throughout North America to come to South Florida to perform at PureHoney\u2019s annual anniversary celebration, Bumblefest. \u2013 Florida Weekly<\/strong><\/p>\n
